I lived in Delhi for three years, from 2005 to 2008. My younger son was born there. It is an overwhelming place: vast, sprawling, and populated by some 17 million people. I think that one could spend a lifetime in Delhi without really ‘knowing’ it in its totality. At first I found this disconcerting, but I gradually came to accept that one had to approach it one neighbourhood at a time. Delhi is like a Russian doll, or an onion: there are always more layers of history and culture than you are at first aware of.
